Plaça de la Virreina
This is one of the most relaxed squares in Gràcia. It is leafy, spacious and pretty. To sit on the steps of the church of Sant Joan on the north end and watch the leisurely wanderings of locals and interlopers is to get a true sense of Gràcia away from the bars and restaurants. It also has the ability to surprise; from impromptu gatherings of tango dancers to a huge mosaic of tea light candles in the shape of tree, you can never be entirely sure what might be in store for you. Most Sunday mornings the square bursts into life with a market filled with all manner of 2nd hand goods as well as some very original artisan items.
There are three cafés to choose from on the square – Terra on the northern end and La Cafeteria and Virreina Bar on the south-east end. Virreina makes a great sandwich and is my favourite of the three. There is also a great shop for babies and toddlers called Bateau Lune.
