Plaça de la Vila de Gràcia
This is home to Gràcia’s Ajuntament (Town Hall), which is also where the great capgrossos and gigants for Gràcia’s local festivals are stored, so feel free to pop in and have a gander. The wonderful castellers generally culminate their performances here too. These are the people who build the incredible human towers, or ‘castles’, that often reach five ‘storeys, or more, in height. It’s a popular Catalan tradition and the crowd are expected to help providing a solid base for the ‘towers’.
Like many other squares in Gràcia you’ll frequently find live music, theatre and other performances at the weekends, generally on a Sunday. The square is dominated by a four-faced clock tower in its centre. To the north are three restaurants Bo, Amelia and Nou Candanchou, all with space in the square and Amelia being the one that most consistently impresses. There’s a pretty good organic pizza slice place called Anima de Gràcia and the great café Curuba. You’ll also find cute little shops such as Kidults Shop La Moda, supplying funky children’s toys and kids-orientated adult clothing, the very pretty candy shop Kawaii and Merengue Hand Made, a bespoke gift and art shop. The square recently underwent a name change from Plaça Rius i Taulet to Plaça de la Vila de Gràcia, so don’t be lead astray by maps and guidebooks naming the former.
