Cinema Malda
On Carrer Pi, just north of the Basilica, stands the 17th century Palau Malda. After the cessation of hostilities in the Spanish Civil War, the building was designated a home for a cinema and art galleries. The cinema, if not exactly hidden, is easy to miss. No neon signs announce it, and the movie posters seem to blend into the wall on which they hang. But if you long for something in the original language, rather than dubbed in to Catalan or Spanish, or if you are tired of the latest Hollywood dross sequel and long to see something with edge and soul, then make sure to find this elusive little movie theatre. It is somewhat under-patronized so can feel a bit like a private showing, or perhaps that was more to do with the last time I was there when I saw a disturbing portrayal of modern Japan; a man falling in love with his blow up doll. Either way, the Maldá should be supported for its distinctly non-commercial slant on cinema.
